Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

It begins innocently enough. A family gathering, one of those group hug things that we like so much in my family. Those of us who could gathered together to share some soup and a wonderful afternoon of teasing Cousin Kyle's new girlfriend. The food was excellent and I've never seen so many deviled eggs consumed in one place.

Not all of us were there of course. Some busy with work far away, others stranded in the Denver snows and some not feeling quite up to par. But those that gathered shared in the family bonding that comes with any gathering of the clan, and after a day filled with laughter we went on our separate ways. If we had only known what the next 48 hours would bring.

It's a short column this week as I finally succumbed to the flu that struck down at least 6 others that gathered that day. It's been a day and a night of high fever, the chills and cuddling up under a warm blanket. Although not as harshly stricken as some of the rest, I got my dose of it for the year, and knew that I'd been given an unusual gift this year. It seems like a right of passage, getting the flu each year. I remember being little and getting it. If we were at Grandma's it meant sleeping with the "puke" blanket and the green dish tub by your bed. It meant days off of school and work, learning to take Nyquil and for some of us probably not realizing that our folks double dosed us just for fun. But after it's over at least you feel better rested, and soon are on your way back to the land of the upright. I'm sure this is just a short bout, and let's for everyone's sake hope it isn't spreading across the country like wildfire and that it's the last we see of it for the year. Now if you'll excuse me, it's back to sipping 7-up and sleeping with the heating pad.

See you next week...Remember we're all in this together...well some of us more than others it seems.
