Ok, before I get started this week, I will be the first to admit that I’ve been only listening to sound bites on the network news this past week between shots of orange juice and cold medication and haven’t really dug deep into the subject I will be addressing.
Far be it from me to let information stop me from making a subject something that needs addressed here in this column so let’s get to it shall we?
I was absolutely shocked the first time I heard it on the radio and waited another hour to make sure I had heard it correctly. Being quarantined without cell phones or televisions the previous weekend I missed tuning into the Washington news shows on Sunday to hear what exactly was going on.
As I understand it the Obama administration has told the Catholic Church that they must now provide contraceptive insurance to all of their employees. I’m going to sit here a minute and let that last sentence sink in a bit while you go back and read it…..
Just so I have it straight in my mind let me try to break it down to basic facts. The White House…our government…GOVERNMENT…is requiring a church organization to provide something that goes against the teachings of that religion. Am I the only one who is starting to see an issue here? The leader of our government is telling a church that it has to provide something against its own doctrine.
Where is the outrage and shock from the ACLU? Where are the church vs. state seperationists? Why aren’t there people picketing in the streets? Are we that indifferent that we don’t care? Or perhaps the so-called “religious right” is not concerned because it doesn’t affect their religious denomination?
Wouldn’t we all be shocked if the government said that all Muslim females had to wear shorts and a tank top anytime they were doing Muslim activities, because darn it…can’t anyone have the right to wear whatever they want in this country? Maybe we should make all Methodists and Lutherans place Burger King restaurants in their fellowship halls instead of having potlucks on Sundays?
Wouldn’t we be completely outraged by this? Regardless of weather you or I agree upon the Catholic Church’s stand on contraception, we should fight as hard for their right to express their religion amongst their employees as we would if someone said we couldn’t stand up and sing during the playing of the national anthem. . It would seem to me that above all freedoms we are granted by this nation; those God given rights, the freedom to worship as we choose should be the one you and fight for the most
Once again it is clear this White House has no real understanding of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights, but is more interested in pushing their own agenda. Was this volley shot by the President necessary in the first place as aren’t we all going to be covered under the government healthcare system that the pushers of “change” wanted so very much?
I for one, am disgusted by the action taken, and urge Pope Benedict at his first opportunity to issue an edict, commanding all Catholics to pray in school at noon each day. I’m sure then someone would sit up and notice.
See you next week…Remember, we’re all in this together.
