It is hard to believe that it's the middle of February already so how about we roll through the week with a few random thoughts.
- If the latest approval ratings for Governor Culver are any indication it may be easy pickings for the Republican nominee this fall. The fact that the economy in Iowa has finally gone in the tank, coupled with the concern that he continues to be the bearer of bad news doesn't seem to be helping his cause any. I'm sure the Governor is a likeable guy, but sometimes when push comes to shove we as taxpayers and voters need a little more substance in that office.
- Speaking of the fall elections. Dexter native Brenna Findley has started a push to oppose Tom Miller for the Iowa Attorney General Spot. I wish her well!
- Yes folks, you'll hear it here first. I'm always a fan of colder weather foods. Chili in particular. But even I'm starting to grow weary of it. I used the Early Chapel cookbook this last weekend and nearly lost my hand trying to dish out the Tater Tot casserole fast enough to three hungry mouths.
- As I sit down and write this week, we are somewhere around 55 inches of snow for the winter so far. Only about 18 inches to go to break the record.
- The Iowa State Fair opens in less than six months! I can already taste the corn dogs!
- Is anyone else started to wonder where all the water will go when the snow on the ground finally melts? I think it could be a long wet spring for many of us.
- Between convincing the kids the Wii was broken and a couple of basektball games, I did get to sit down and watch a little of the Olympics. It's been very exciting so far. Did anyone else catch the Daytona 500? If you were channel surfing you may have as it covered the airwaves for nearly 7 hours as they tried to repair a pothole in the middle of the track. I say they should have just thrown up a couple of orange barrels and made the boys race around them just like the rest of us!
- There isn't anything so grand as making someone special smile and you can never go wrong with a box of Drew's. But it was really hard letting that box go before I sampled it.
- I was really hoping to see Red Green light the Olympic torch. And as we sat and watched the opening ceremonies I said to the kids as we all waited for the malfunctioning piece of the torch, "Someone probably is trying to find a roll of duct tape."
- Finally this week, I know that I missed Groundhog day so in that spirit I rolled over this morning and peeked out from under the covers and did indeed see my shadow. I'm not sure what that means for Winter, but I have got to start turning the light off before I fall asleep at night. Stay warm!
See you next week. Remember...we're all in this together.
