Consider this quote from Abe Lincoln

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

The year is at its halfway point and it is hard to imagine where the first part of the year has gone. Let’s look back and ahead with a few random thoughts.

  1. We dodged a bullet last week with the severe weather that roared through our area. Not only is this a good reminder to each of us to make sure we have a storm emergency plan, but especially for those who have kids home during the day to make sure they are aware of the plan and know what to do.

  2. I have spent a month so far taking the long way around to get to my house. Needless to say road construction is not my favorite time of year, but this year especially. At the rate the crews are moving they might actually finish sometime in 2017. One bright side is that it has sure cut down on the amount of traffic on my road which makes sitting on the porch at night a little more peaceful.

  3. Be on the watch for insects. Take a moment to walk around your place and empty standing water. The mosquitos will be out in full force soon, (they are starting to grow fairly big already), and keep an eye on your gardens as the rains haven’t seem to be drowning out the little grasshoppers like it should.

  4. I wonder what it is going to take to keep schools from starting during State Fair. Seriously? August 14th? Are you kidding me? Why don’t we just call it what it is, have a year round school and just give students extended breaks. Wouldn’t it be far easier to plan things in the long run?

  5. I was driving by the park in Dexter the other day on my way home and thought to myself how nice it would be if there was a gazebo like structure in the old camping area. Imagine a place where we could have bands play, or other cool events?

  6. The crop destruction over towards Adair last week was truly amazing. I’ve seen hail damage before but never to the extent of what they had where entire fields were wiped clean.

  7. Some of my Facebook friends have spent a few nights complaining about not being able to see their favorite television shows because of storm coverage. I for one feel that it is better to be on the safe side. Even if the storm isn’t in our area, in the end if it was we sure would want to know what was going on.

  8. The first cucumbers have arrived out of the garden, including one monster that has eveindentally been hiding for a while.

  9. The chickens have now started bullying the cats as they have discovered that cat food tastes better than chicken food. I don’t fully understand but obviously I need to buy better chicken food or stop spending money on high dollar cat food. The cats certainly don’t seem to mind at all and are happy to share although they aren’t really excited about chicken grit at all.

  10. Finally this week, I hope everyone got out and enjoyed what they could of the July 4th holiday. Remember we’ve got County Fairs coming up and vacations to be had so take a little extra time to be safe out there. See you next week….remember, we’re all in this together.
