Another month seems to be slipping away so here are a few random thoughts.

With the summer weather we have been having lately I’m far from in the mood for harvest to get underway. Although it soybean harvest is somewhat hit and miss around these parts, up around Highway 30 there are large fields that are clean which means we won’t be too far behind.

With harvest, it is important to remember to have a little patience on the roads and leave a little early if you are heading somewhere. You’re going to get stuck behind some equipment going down the road so take your time, and also keep an eye out for field driveways and truck and tractor traffic.

By the time you read this if Redfield is somewhere you head to you probably have figured out that Dallas county has closed the bridge south of town until November for repairs. I’m not sure who thought that closing a market road during harvest was a good idea, but hopefully it will be over sooner than later.

One of the few things I like about fall, other than the lack of mosquitos and sweating has to be apple crisp. It’s a confirmation that someone loves you with every bite.

Planning has begun for Dexter’s’ Sesquicentennial. I wonder how the event will compare to the Centennial and Quasquicentennial. In looking back through old newspapers I did notice that during the 1976 Bi-Centennial they showed movies of the Centennial. I wonder what ever happened to them.

In the last week I’ve misplaced three separate pairs of reading glasses. It’s no wonder that I always have four or five pair in different places in the house

I had the opportunity to chaperone a high school dance lately and I’m amazed by the dancing skills of today’s youth. What surprised me most was watching my son in the middle of an entire crowd “busting a move” and hearing the cheers of those around him. Where he got his ability to dance and not looking like he is having a stroke like his old man I’ll never know.

I have been trying to catch up on as much sleep as possible before I start meeting myself coming and going from work, but as hard as I have tried the last few weeks I just can’t seem to take a nap. The part that frustrates me most is that I could have been doing something instead of just laying there hoping to fall asleep.

Have you ever noticed that nothing can frustrate you more than one lone fly who refuses to get out of your car?

Finally this week, don’t ask me what gas prices are doing. In Dexter it’s been $2.61 for weeks and yet in Guthrie Center and Panora it’s been $2.50 and at the Cenex store east of Perry on Highway 169 it was $2.40. Either someone is taking it in the shorts or we are getting gouged but I can’t figure out which. It pays to shop around a bit I guess. Stay safe while you’re out and about this week. See you next week…remember, we’re all in this together.
