The month of October is upon us, which means an excessive amount of all things pumpkin, cool nights, the end to mosquitos and of course another round of random thoughts….

They say that as you age the memory is the first thing to go. Especially when you think you are a year older than you actually are.

The free loading cat has a new move which leads me to believe that he is not quite right in the head. When I come home at nights he now runs up on the back step and rolls onto his back waiting for you to scratch his belly. I think he thinks he is a dog or it’s just a way to lull me into a false sense of security around him.

I decided that a few hours of mowing the yard was good therapy this past weekend. Have you ever noticed that you only run out of gas in the place farthest away from the gas can when mowing?

This clown thing is getting kind of ridiculous isn’t it? And the thought that one of them will be in the White House come January doesn’t make it any better.

Fall means apple crisp…make it happen.

If you didn’t get the Sunday Des Moines Register you missed out on an interesting article about the members of the Sioux Nation getting together in the Dakotas to protest the pipeline. It was a great article and I’m surprised it made it to the news as it seems that the media tends to ignore the Native American issues.

The news of the closing of the Redfield Locker in a couple months is sad…where am I going to get my beef stick fix now?

I think those of us who work with our hands are always continuously amazed at that one person at work that doesn’t know their own strength and torques every bolt harder than can be loosened with a breaker bar and a twelve foot length of pipe.

Kudos to the faculty and staff at Earlham who kept the Homecoming spirit going even though the game had been canceled. It may have not been what you planned but I think everyone made great memories this week and had fun in the process.

If you haven’t done so yet, now is the time to pull in those summer plants if you plan to keep them over winter.

I’ve often wondered if my lack of organization when it comes to my desk is because I get sidetracked when I find something I forgot I had. Of course that leads into a larger debate about throwing things away because we all know the minute you throw something away that you haven’t looked at in years you will need it the next week.

Finally this week, I’ve been watching the mood of the country lately and I don’t know that I’ve ever seen people as divided as we all are right now. I know in Iowa we tend to be a little insulated from having to deal with people of different races, but maybe that is what causes me so much confusion. Maybe things in other parts of the country are really different, but I know that I have friends who aren’t Caucasian and I think they are awesome people who work hard to have a good life just as you and I do. Maybe we all need to just get back to being kind to one another, because the color of one’s skin isn’t really the thing that should divide us. See you next week, remember….we’re all in this together.
