I was in such a rush last week that I forgot to tell a story about a lesson the kids taught me a while back.
The two youngest ones came home to tell us about Columbus Day. According to the 1st Grader this is how things happened. “George” Columbus had three ships and they sailed across the ocean to discover America.
At this point the kindergartener broke in with “The ships were the Nina, the Pinta and the Santa Maria”. They spent the next couple of minutes arguing back and forth about Columbus’ real first name. Paige sure that his name was George and Max telling her that in his class his name was Christopher.
I let the game go on for a while before I broke in. In my best Cliff Claven voice I started, “Well kids, you know that good old George Christopher Columbus actually discovered the Virgin Islands and it was the Vikings who really discovered America”.
Max gave me his best angry face and punching his hands together said “Mrs. Schwartz LIED TO ME!”. This was followed by me laughing as I continued to regale the kids with my vast Norwegian folk lore tales as the Mrs., her arms waving frantically in the air, begged me to tell the kids I’d made it all up.
And as we neared the end of our talk, I turned to Max and asked him if he knew why the Vikings came to America?
He smiled at me, thought for a moment, and exclaimed, “To play the Green Ray Packers and they probably got beat cause the Vikings aren’t any good!”
At least the boy learned something from his old man.
See you next week...Remember, we're all in this together.
